Shower water and children's skin in New Zealand
Worse after every bath, and you put it down to the soap. Most parents do.
If your child's skin looks angrier coming out of the water than going in, write it down.
The water is worth ruling in or out. It is the one thing in that bathroom you cannot buy a different version of.
This page is about what New Zealand suppliers put in shower water and where it varies. It is not medical advice, and nothing on it is a reason to change anything a doctor has you doing.
What is in your child's shower water in New Zealand?
Water suppliers maintain a disinfectant residual to protect water through the supply network.
New Zealand suppliers use free chlorine. Free chlorine is volatile, which is why a hot shower can smell of it.
Watercare doses about 1.2 mg/L at its Ardmore plant, and Tiaki Wai holds at least about 0.4 mg/L across the Wellington network.

Why vitamin C rather than carbon
Most carbon filters are built around free chlorine, and they need contact time. A shower gives the water very little.
Vitamin C, which is ascorbic acid, reduces free chlorine chemically rather than trying to adsorb it, which is the reason Suhae uses it. Limits included, the mechanism is on the chemistry page.
Baths and showers are different
A bath involves longer contact with standing water. A shower filter only treats water that passes through the connected shower outlet.
Baths, showers and the hand shower
Solid is filtered, dashed is not. The filter sits above the head, so the spout below it is untouched.
Does a shower filter work for a bath?
Nobody in this category will tell you this, so we will. A filter screws in above the shower head. It does nothing at all to water coming out of a bath spout.
Where it does apply to a small child is the hand shower. If you rinse hair and skin off with the hand shower at the end of the bath, that rinse is filtered and the bath is not. For an older child who showers, all of it is.
If your bathroom has a fixed head over the bath and no hand shower on a hose, that rinse is not available to you either.

Could shower water be one factor?
Three questions. It is not a diagnosis and it collects nothing.
Answer the three above
Use the questions below to compare timing, location changes and lower-cost routine changes before buying a filter.
Yes to all three
If discomfort follows washing or changed after a move, checking local water may be useful. This pattern does not identify a cause or replace medical advice.
Yes to two
Some answers point towards the shower routine, while others do not. Try simple changes one at a time and compare the timing before adding filtration.
Mostly no, or not sure
The current pattern does not strongly point to shower water. Continue tracking when the discomfort appears and seek medical advice for persistent symptoms.
What people report
Two Australian reviews of shower filters, quoted as written. They are not Suhae reviews, and each is one person's experience.
My daughter has been scratching her body for months now, the doctor gave us steroid creams and I have seen rave reviews of this filter all over social media.
Sarah Thomas, NSW. One reviewer's own words, ProductReview.com.au.My family and I moved into a new rental a few months ago, the shower water was causing our eczema prone skin to feel like it was burning.
Kaitlyn T, NSW. One reviewer's own words, ProductReview.com.au.The New Zealand facts
Free chlorine in every town supply. Christchurch chlorinated since March 2018. Wellington soft, at 18 to 45 mg/L. Sources: Taumata Arowai (9 August 2024), Christchurch City Council, Tiaki Wai, Watercare and Water New Zealand, read 3 October 2026.
Three things to check before choosing a shower filter
Check the published chlorine result
Chlorine not detected from 1,000 to 6,000 litres, KEWI IW-230133.
Korea Environment and Water Works Institute, certificate IW-230133, April 2023, on the Aromica Vita C filter.
Knowing when the cartridge is spent
Universal cartridge life is not currently published. Ask our team for the latest product guidance before ordering replacements.
There is no indicator either, so nothing tells you when it is spent.
So how would you know, and what does it cost to stop
Buy a couple of free chlorine test strips, a few dollars at a pool shop, and check it yourself every few weeks.
The method is written out here, on the page that owns it.
If the reading goes the wrong way, the whole thing unscrews in about a minute and your own head goes back on.
Nothing was replaced and nothing was drilled, so stopping costs you the minute.
We hold no NSF/ANSI 177 certification
Suhae is not certified to that standard.
What to do if certification matters to you
Ask any brand you are considering to name theirs and show you the certificate.
A standard cited without a certificate number behind it is a word rather than a result.
Before you look at ours, we wrote a guide to choosing one, and it names the questions we answer badly.
Check your city, then choose a filter that fits
Suhae Universal goes on behind the shower head you already have. The NZ Water Guide shows what your supplier uses, Christchurch first.
