Tauranga water guide
Is Tauranga tap water chlorinated?
How Tauranga treats its spring-fed supply, why silica can mark shower glass and what a shower filter can and cannot change.

Quick answer
Yes. Tauranga City Council adds a small amount of chlorine after microfiltration to protect water as it travels through the pipe network.
What is in Tauranga tap water?
Tauranga’s drinking water comes from the Tautau, Waiorohi and Waiari spring-fed streams. The council uses microfiltration to remove dirt and micro-organisms, then adds chlorine for protection through the network.
The council also reports about 35 to 50 mg/L of reactive silica in its source waters. Silica can leave cloudy white marks on shower glass when heated water evaporates. That is different from chlorine and is not the same question as water hardness.
What this means in the shower
A filter selected for free chlorine does not necessarily remove silica deposits. If shower-glass marks are your main concern, follow the council’s cleaning advice; if disinfectant smell is the concern, compare published chlorine testing.
A shower filter treats water only at that shower outlet. It may reduce selected substances according to its media and test conditions, but it does not make hard water soft or replace official drinking-water advice.

Is Tauranga tap water chlorinated?
Yes. Tauranga City Council says a small amount is added after treatment to protect water through the network.
Is Tauranga water hard?
Tauranga’s council highlights reactive silica as a cause of cloudy deposits on shower glass. A shower filter is not a softener and should not be presented as a solution for mineral or silica scale.
Which shower filter should I choose?
Choose by shower fitting first. Universal keeps a compatible existing shower head; Nourish and Radiance replace a compatible handshower; Aura provides overhead coverage. Compare the full range before ordering.
