Why you are here

Shower water and breakouts in New Zealand

Breakouts on your chest or back that nobody has explained, and one thing worth noticing: they were better while you were away from home.

A holiday usually gets credited to the sun and the sleep. The water changed too, and at home in New Zealand it is chlorinated wherever there is town supply.

What you have already changed

The variables around your shower

If you are working out what is behind body breakouts, change products, clothing, laundry, routine and water one at a time.

Nothing is stored and nothing is sent anywhere. This is a counter, not a form.

Put your water on the list

New Zealand town water is chlorinated, and how much reaches your shower depends on your supplier and how far you are from the plant.

Notice where it changes

Does your skin behave differently at home, at a new flat, or on holiday?

Why travel is a useful comparison

A different town usually means different water, even when the rest of your routine travels with you.

It is the nearest most people get to running a controlled test on themselves, and nobody sets out to run it.

Keep medical care separate from product testing

Breakouts have many possible causes. A shower filter is not a treatment for acne or any medical condition.

Speak with a doctor or dermatologist about persistent, painful or diagnosed skin concerns.

In short

What is in New Zealand shower water?

Activated carbon adsorbs, which is a physical trap.

Ascorbic acid reacts chemically with chlorine compounds. SUHAE uses vitamin C filtration rather than relying only on adsorption.

Free chlorine, and why heat matters

The residual left in New Zealand tap water is free chlorine. It is still there at the head.

Free chlorine is volatile, so a good deal of it leaves the water as that water heats, which is why a hot shower smells of it.

How vitamin C deals with it is on the chemistry page.

Your city

Does your water fit the story?

Hardness and chlorine are different water issues. Check what your supplier publishes before choosing filtration for chlorine, particles or limescale.

If you are in Wellington or Christchurch

The water is soft, so hardness is not your problem, and the disinfectant is free chlorine.

If your story is white crust and film on the glass

In Wellington or Christchurch that is very unlikely to be hardness.

If your supplier's figures show soft water, choose a filter for a verified chlorine or particle claim rather than hardness removal.

Auckland is not one supply for this purpose. Watercare describes its sources as soft to moderately hard and publishes no single figure.

Before you buy anything, see what your supplier uses.

Reviews, and the facts beside them

What people report

Two Australian reviews of shower filters, quoted as written, with the New Zealand water facts beside them.

I had chest acne for the last 12 months, and couldn't figure out why. The dermatologist said it was probably hormonal and wanted to prescribe a pill.

If your skin was better away from home

My skin seemed to clear up whenever I was overseas and I started to wonder if it was due to the chlorine etc in our water.

The New Zealand facts What we can source about New Zealand water, each with its source.

  • Free chlorine in every town supply
  • Christchurch: chlorinated since March 2018
  • Wellington: 18 to 45 mg/L, soft
  • Auckland: soft to moderately hard
  • No chloramine on record, says Taumata Arowai
  • 225,000+ people not on town supply (2019)
Where those facts came from

Taumata Arowai (9 August 2024), Christchurch City Council, Tiaki Wai, Watercare and Water New Zealand, read 3 October 2026.

Every figure is on the NZ Water Guide, with its source and date.

What soft-water buyers already know

The itchiness and thick waxy residue I had felt stopped the moment I removed the filter, proving it was a compatibility issue with soft water (53.8mg/L).

An Australian reviewer writing about a different brand's mineral-adding filter. One person's experience.

That one stays on the page because it is the most useful review in the set. The buyer worked out that a mineral-adding filter was the wrong product for water that was already soft, checked it against the supplier's own published figure, and said so publicly.

It is the correct instinct. Most New Zealand town water is soft, and a brand that tells buyers otherwise gets taken apart with their own supplier's data.

What the evidence covers

What shower-filter evidence does not establish

SUHAE does not claim that shower filtration treats acne, breakouts or any skin condition. Product evidence covers the stated water, media and flow results only.

Use this page to understand local water, compare filtration mechanisms and decide whether a shower-water change is a useful variable to test alongside appropriate medical advice.

18 to 45 mg/L hardness at Tiaki Wai's treatment plants, all soft

Where to start in New Zealand

Keep your shower head and change one thing: the chlorine

SUHAE Universal adds vitamin C filtration behind a compatible showerhead without replacing the showerhead you already use.

SUHAE Universal

It sits between the wall fitting and the shower head you already have, so nothing is replaced and nothing is plumbed.

What that means if you rent, or if you change your mind

About two minutes by hand, and it unscrews again if you move.

Your own head goes back on and the fitting is as you found it.

Knowing when the cartridge is spent

No life figure is published for it and none belonging to another product will be borrowed. There is no indicator either.

So how would you know

Free chlorine strips from a pool shop, read every few weeks against the same chart. The protocol is written out here.

A reading that has drifted back is your answer, and unscrewing it takes about a minute.

New Zealand's town water is chlorinated. Your shower is where you notice it.

Check your city, then pick a filter that fits

See what your supplier uses in the NZ Water Guide, starting with Christchurch, then match a Suhae to the shower you have.

Universal is the entry SUHAE option for keeping a compatible existing showerhead.

Two minutes by hand, no plumber. Made in Korea, sold by an Australian company with an ABN you can check, and WhatsApp answered within 24 hours. Lifetime warranty on the housing; the cartridge is a consumable. Terms.
